Praia de Conceicao & Praia de Duquesa Beach

Praia de Conceicao and Praia de Duquesa are a pair of semi-connected beaches on the Cascais and Estoril coastline. Both beaches offer glorious golden sand, calm and clean waters and numerous bars/restaurants/cafes that line the promenade that runs the length of the two beaches. Praia de Conceicao is the more westerly of the two beaches and is the first large beach within walking distance of Cascais.

Estoril is further along the coast and has its own equivalent beach of Paira do Tamaiza but the beaches of Conceicao and Duquesa offer variety. Both Praia de Conceicao and Praia de Duquesa are suitable for families and designed for visitors who are happy just to lie all day and sap up the sun. At the weekends Conceicao and Duquesa beaches tend to fill quickly due to the convenient transport connections with Lisbon.

Tourist Information for Praia de Conceicao and Duquesa

At the eastern end of the beach is the Palacio do Duque de Palmela. The two beaches are connected by the Estoril-Cascais coastal promenade and the sand bar is completely connected at low tide. As Conceicao is closer to the station it tends to be slightly busier.

The beaches are perfectly suited for families with small children as the sea is very calm with no hidden currents and even the tides are gentle. The sea is watched by lifeguards during the summer season but the water remains shockingly cold even at the height of summer. The amenities at the Conceicao and Duquesa beaches are good with beach bars and restaurants lining the beach. Parasols and deck chairs can be hired but prices are over inflated costing €15 for the whole day hire.

The Palacio do Duque de Palmela

These two beaches are the best of the coastline directly infront of Cascais-Estoril and were popular since the early 19th century with the Portuguese nobility. The Praia de Duquesa beach was named after the Duchess of Palmela who was especially fond of the beach which lay in front of her home the Palacio do Duque de Palmela.

The Palacio do Duque de Palmela was constructed in 1868 as a summer home for the Duke of Palmela. The Praia de Conceicao is named after the small chapel which lies next to the beach. The chapel’s name is the Nossa Senhora da Conceicao and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The official divide between the Praia de Duquesa and the Praia de Conceicao is located at the Faial Chalet the former Court of Justice for Cascais province.
